Sustainable Greeting Cards

Our Environmental Commitment

We believe every greeting card should connect hearts without costing the earth

100% Sustainable Forestry

Since 2008, every sheet of paper in our greeting cards has been sourced from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified forests. This ensures responsible forest management, protecting biodiversity and supporting local communities.

Real Impact (2024 Data):

  • 18.7 million cards printed on FSC certified paper
  • Zero paper sourced from endangered forest regions
  • Partners with 12 FSC certified mills across North America
  • Annual third-party chain-of-custody audit (last audit: Nov 2024, 100% compliance)

95% Recyclable Materials

Our cards are designed for end-of-life recyclability. We use water-based inks, recyclable glitter alternatives, and minimal plastic components to ensure nearly all our greeting cards can be recycled in standard curbside programs.

Material Composition (2024 Average):

  • Paper/cardstock: 92% (100% recyclable)
  • Plant-based inks: 5% (biodegradable)
  • Adhesives & coatings: 2.5% (water-soluble)
  • Non-recyclable embellishments: <0.5% (ribbons, metallic accents on premium lines only)

Water-Based Printing Technology

We transitioned to 100% water-based inks in 2015, eliminating volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from our printing process. This shift reduced our air pollution by 78% and improved workplace safety for our printing staff at our Kansas City facility.

Verified Impact (2020-2024):

  • 78% reduction in VOC emissions (EPA verification, March 2024)
  • 23% lower energy consumption per card vs. solvent-based inks
  • Zero hazardous waste disposal from ink production
  • Source: Internal sustainability audit, Hallmark Greetings 2024 Annual Report

Carbon-Neutral Delivery

Since 2022, all corporate card programs and bulk orders over 500 units include carbon-neutral shipping at no extra cost. We partner with verified carbon offset programs focusing on reforestation and renewable energy projects.

Carbon Offset Achievements (2024):

  • 4,287 metric tons CO2 offset through reforestation projects
  • Equivalent to removing 932 cars from roads for one year
  • Projects verified by Gold Standard & Verra registries
  • 87% of corporate clients opt for carbon-neutral shipping

Sustainable Operations at Our Kansas City Facility

Daily practices that reduce our environmental footprint across production, energy, and waste management

Renewable Energy

Our 67,000 sq ft Kansas City printing facility installed 1,200 solar panels in 2022, generating 45% of our annual electricity needs. The remaining 55% is sourced from wind energy through our utility provider.

2024 Energy Breakdown:

  • Solar (on-site): 45% (428 MWh)
  • Wind (grid): 55% (523 MWh)
  • Total renewable: 100%
  • CO2 avoided: 671 metric tons vs. grid average
Zero-Waste Initiative

We achieved 82% waste diversion in 2024 through comprehensive recycling, composting, and material reuse programs. Our goal is 90% diversion by 2027 and zero-waste certification by 2030.

2024 Waste Management:

  • Paper waste recycled: 187 tons (95% recovery)
  • Cardboard recycled: 43 tons
  • Composted materials: 12 tons
  • Landfill waste: 47 tons (18% of total)
Water Conservation

Transitioning to water-based inks required significant water management upgrades. Our closed-loop water recycling system installed in 2018 recycles 67% of process water, reducing municipal water consumption by 1.2 million gallons annually.

2024 Water Usage:

  • Total water used: 2.8M gallons
  • Recycled water: 1.88M gallons (67%)
  • Fresh water: 0.92M gallons
  • Savings vs. 2017: 43% reduction

Our 2030 Sustainability Roadmap

Ambitious goals backed by concrete action plans and investment commitments

Zero-Waste Facility

Achieve 90% waste diversion by 2027 and zero-waste certification by 2030 through advanced sorting technology and circular material partnerships.

Planned Investments:

  • $1.2M automated sorting equipment (2026)
  • Partnerships with 3 material recovery facilities
  • Employee training program: 100% staff certified

100% Plant-Based Inks

Transition from water-based synthetic inks to 100% plant-derived inks (soy, algae, vegetable oils) by 2028, further reducing petroleum dependency.

Current Progress:

  • Pilot testing with 3 plant-based ink suppliers (2024-2025)
  • Target: 50% plant-based by 2026
  • Full conversion by 2028

Carbon Negative Operations

Go beyond carbon neutrality to become carbon negative by 2030, offsetting more emissions than we produce through reforestation and renewable energy investments.

2030 Target:

  • 125% carbon offset (net -25% emissions)
  • 10,000 trees planted annually via partnerships
  • Scope 3 supply chain emission tracking
